You Can’t Start a New Life with the Old You

John 3:1-13 NIV

1     Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a member of the Jewish ruling council.

2     He came to Jesus at night and said, “Rabbi, we know you are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the miraculous signs you are doing if God were not with him.”

3     In reply Jesus declared, “I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again.”

4     “How can a man be born when he is old?” Nicodemus asked. “Surely he cannot enter a second time into his mother’s womb to be born!”

5     Jesus answered, “I tell you the truth, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit.

6     Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit.

7     You should not be surprised at my saying, ‘You must be born again.’

8     The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.”

9     “How can this be?” Nicodemus asked.

10   “You are Israel’s teacher,” said Jesus, “and do you not understand these things?

11   I tell you the truth, we speak of what we know, and we testify to what we have seen, but still you people do not accept our testimony.

12   I have spoken to you of earthly things and you do not believe; how then will you believe if I speak of heavenly things?

13   No one has ever gone into heaven except the one who came from heaven–the Son of Man.

Words with which the message of entire Bible can be summarized:

  1. Generation

Genesis 1:1 NIV – In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

  • Degeneration

Genesis 3:1-6 NIV1 Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?” 2 The woman said to the serpent, “We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, 3 but God did say, ‘You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.'” 4 “You will not surely die,” the serpent said to the woman. 5 “For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” 6 When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it.

  • Regeneration

John 7:50-52 MSG50 Nicodemus, the man who had come to Jesus earlier and was both a ruler and a Pharisee, spoke up. 51 “Does our Law decide about a man’s guilt without first listening to him and finding out what he is doing?” 52 But they cut him off. “Are you also campaigning for the Galilean?

John 19:39 NIV – He was accompanied by Nicodemus, the man who earlier had visited Jesus at night. Nicodemus brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about seventy-five pounds.

John 3:19-21 NIV19 This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. 20 Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. 21 But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God.”

(vs Jn 3:1-3, 7)

  1. The Meaning of the New Birth

(v. 4)

The Greek word for again is another.

  1. Again or second time – on a physical level.
  2. Anew or an awakening.
  3. From above or from God.

John 3:31 NIV – The one who comes from above is above all; the one who is from the earth belongs to the earth, and speaks as one from the earth. The one who comes from heaven is above all.

John 19:11 NIV – Jesus answered, “You would have no power over me if it were not given to you from above. Therefore the one who handed me over to you is guilty of a greater sin.”

A new direction in life because you have a new perspective.

  1. The Method of the New Birth

John 1:10-13 NIV10 He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. 11 He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. 12 Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God– 13 children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.

Salvation is not something achieved.

Human:

  1. Generation

God has children but no grandchildren.

  • Perspiration
  • Inspiration
  • Education

(Jn. 1:10-12)

Salvation is not achieved; it is received by faith.

Believing means to surrender.

  1. The Magnificence of the New Birth

John 3:16 NIV – “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”

Faith doesn’t always take you from the problem; faith takes you through the problem.

Faith doesn’t always take away the pain; faith gives you the ability to handle the pain.

Faith doesn’t always take you out of the storm; faith calms you in the midst of the storm.

John 19:38-42 NIV38 Later, Joseph of Arimathea asked Pilate for the body of Jesus. Now Joseph was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly because he feared the Jews. With Pilate’s permission, he came and took the body away. 39 He was accompanied by Nicodemus, the man who earlier had visited Jesus at night. Nicodemus brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about seventy-five pounds. 40 Taking Jesus’ body, the two of them wrapped it, with the spices, in strips of linen. This was in accordance with Jewish burial customs. 41 At the place where Jesus was crucified, there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb, in which no one had ever been laid. 42 Because it was the Jewish day of Preparation and since the tomb was nearby, they laid Jesus there.
