The Thirst of Grace

SERIES – Wilderness University

Exodus 17:1-7 NAS

1     Then all the congregation of the sons of Israel journeyed by stages from the wilderness of Sin, according to the command of the Lord, and camped at Rephidim, and there was no water for the people to drink.

2     Therefore the people quarreled with Moses and said, “Give us water that we may drink.” And Moses said to them, “Why do you quarrel with me? Why do you test the Lord?”

3     But the people thirsted there for water; and they grumbled against Moses and said, “Why, now, have you brought us up from Egypt, to kill us and our children and our livestock with thirst?”

4     So Moses cried out to the Lord, saying, “What shall I do to this people? A little more and they will stone me.”

5     Then the Lord said to Moses, “Pass before the people and take with you some of the elders of Israel; and take in your hand your staff with which you struck the Nile, and go.

6     “Behold, I will stand before you there on the rock at Horeb; and you shall strike the rock, and water will come out of it, that the people may drink.” And Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel.

7     He named the place Massah and Meribah because of the quarrel of the sons of Israel, and because they tested the Lord, saying, “Is the Lord among us, or not?”

Job 6:18-21 NAS18 “The paths of their course wind along, They go up into nothing and perish. 19 “The caravans of Tema looked, The travelers of Sheba hoped for them. 20 “They were disappointed for they had trusted, They came there and were confounded. 21 “Indeed, you have now become such, You see a terror and are afraid.

A worried person sees a problem; a concerned person solves a problem.

Philippians 4:6 GNV – Don’t worry about anything, but in all your prayers ask God for what you need, always asking him with a thankful heart.

Concern leads to positive action.

Worry leads to negative action.

Matthew 6:31 GNV – “So do not start worrying: ‘Where will my food come from? or my drink? or my clothes?’

Worry:           You       problems        God

Concern:     You           God            problems

How they tripped:

I. The demanded God’s provisions

II. They disregarded God’s protection

Exodus 15:24 NAS – And the people complained to Moses, “So what are we supposed to drink?”

Exodus 16:2 NAS – The whole company of Israel complained against Moses and Aaron there in the wilderness.

Philippians 2:14 NAS – Do everything readily and cheerfully—no bickering, no second-guessing allowed!

III. They doubted God’s presence

God will not permit any troubles to come upon us unless he has a specific plan by which great blessings will come from the troubles.

Psalm 105:41 NAS – He opened the rock and water poured out; it flowed like a river through that desert…

Psalm 105:36-41 GNV36 He killed the first-born sons of all the families of Egypt. 37 Then he led the Israelites out; they carried silver and gold, and all of them were healthy and strong. 38 The Egyptians were afraid of them and were glad when they left.  39 God put a cloud over his people and a fire at night to give them light. 40 They asked, and he sent quails; he gave them food from heaven to satisfy them. 41 He opened a rock, and water gushed out, flowing through the desert like a river.

1 Corinthians 10:1-4 GNV 1 I want you to remember, my friends, what happened to our ancestors who followed Moses. They were all under the protection of the cloud, and all passed safely through the Red Sea. 2 In the cloud and in the sea they were all baptized as followers of Moses. 3 All ate the same spiritual bread 4 and drank the same spiritual drink. They drank from the spiritual rock that went with them; and that rock was Christ himself.
