“How to have a Mary Christmas”

Luke 1:26-38 KJV

26   And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth,

27   To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin’s name was Mary.

28   And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women.

29   And when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this should be.

30   And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God.
31 And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name Jesus.

32   He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David:

33   And he shall reign over the house of Jacob forever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.

34   Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man?

35   And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.

36   And, behold, thy cousin Elisabeth, she hath also conceived a son in her old age: and this is the sixth month with her, who was called barren.

37   For with God nothing shall be impossible.

38   And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her.

The annunciation is the words of the angel Gabriel to Mary.

I. You don’t have to have status to be used of God

John 1:45-46 NIV45 Philip found Nathanael and told him, “We have found the one Moses wrote about in the Law, and about whom the prophets also wrote—Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.” 46 “Nazareth! Can anything good come from there?” Nathanael asked. “Come and see,” said Philip.

John 1:45-46 MSG45 Philip went and found Nathanael and told him, “We’ve found the One Moses wrote of in the Law, the One preached by the prophets. It’s Jesus, Joseph’s son, the one from Nazareth!” 46 Nathanael said, “Nazareth? You’ve got to be kidding.” But Philip said, “Come, see for yourself.”

  1. You don’t have to be sinless

The first witness to the incarnation was a woman, Mary

The first witness to the resurrection was a woman, who was a mental patient

John 20:10-14 NIV10 Then the disciples went back to where they were staying.  Jesus Appears to Mary Magdalene  11 Now Mary stood outside the tomb crying. As she wept, she bent over to look into the tomb 12 and saw two angels in white, seated where Jesus’ body had been, one at the head and the other at the foot.  13 They asked her, “Woman, why are you crying?”  “They have taken my Lord away,” she said, “and I don’t know where they have put him.”  14 At this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not realize that it was Jesus.

Things Mary did

  1. Mary engaged in analytical thinking (vs. 28-29)

The Greek word for wonder is Dialogizomai

The word logic means to think through something

  • Mary surrendered her Lordship to God and became a servant (vs. 35-38)

Luke 1:35-38 NIV35 The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God. 36 Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child in her old age, and she who was said to be unable to conceive is in her sixth month. 37 For no word from God will ever fail.” 38 “I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered. “May your word to me be fulfilled.” Then the angel left her.

  • Mary left the details to God

Luke 1:29-37 NIV29 Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. 37 For no word from God will ever fail.”

Many people are not being used by God because they trip on the three-letter word how

Nothing is impossible which means that nothing through God is impossible to fix and to face
