Pray

SERIES: The Church’s Response to a Hurting World

James 5:13-18 NIV

13   Is any one of you in trouble? He should pray. Is anyone happy? Let him sing songs of praise.

14   Is any one of you sick? He should call the elders of the church to pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord.

15   And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise him up. If he has sinned, he will be forgiven.

16   Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective.

17   Elijah was a man just like us. He prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and it did not rain on the land for three and a half years.

18   Again he prayed, and the heavens gave rain, and the earth produced its crops.

Prayer has great effect.

Effect is a noun which means the consequences of an action.

Affect is a verb denoting action.

The affect (verb) of my prayers are effective (noun).

1 Samuel 12:15-23 NIV

15   But if you do not obey the Lord, and if you rebel against his commands, his hand will be against you, as it was against your fathers.

16   “Now then, stand still and see this great thing the Lord is about to do before your eyes!

17   Is it not wheat harvest now? I will call upon the Lord to send thunder and rain. And you will realize what an evil thing you did in the eyes of the Lord when you asked for a king.”

18   Then Samuel called upon the Lord, and that same day the Lord sent thunder and rain. So all the people stood in awe of the Lord and of Samuel.

19   The people all said to Samuel, “Pray to the Lord your God for your servants so that we will not die, for we have added to all our other sins the evil of asking for a king.”

20   “Do not be afraid,” Samuel replied. “You have done all this evil; yet do not turn away from the Lord, but serve the Lord with all your heart.

21   Do not turn away after useless idols. They can do you no good, nor can they rescue you, because they are useless.

22   For the sake of his great name the Lord will not reject his people, because the Lord was pleased to make you his own.

23   As for me, far be it from me that I should sin against the Lord by failing to pray for you. And I will teach you the way that is good and right.

  1. The Season of Prayer
  • In times of trouble
  • Greek word meaning to be afflicted Kakopatheo

James 5:1-6 MSG1 And a final word to you arrogant rich: Take some lessons in lament. You’ll need buckets for the tears when the crash comes upon you. 2 Your money is corrupt and your fine clothes stink. 3 Your greedy luxuries are a cancer in your gut, destroying your life from within. You thought you were piling up wealth. What you’ve piled up is judgment. 4 All the workers you’ve exploited and cheated cry out for judgment. The groans of the workers you used and abused are a roar in the ears of the Master Avenger. 5 You’ve looted the earth and lived it up. But all you’ll have to show for it is a fatter than usual corpse. 6 In fact, what you’ve done is condemn and murder perfectly good persons, who stand there and take it.

  • In times of triumph

In praise, I thank God.

In prayer, I trust God.

  1. The Reason for Prayer

Just getting older does not make you an elder.

John 5:3 KJV – In these lay a great multitude of impotent folk, of blind, halt, withered, waiting for the moving of the water.

Astheneo – sick, impotent

The word sick is the Greek word kamno which means to be wearied or tired.

Elders is the Greek word presbuteroi.

Revelation 12:12 GNV – And so be glad, you heavens, and all you that live there! But how terrible for the earth and the sea! For the Devil has come down to you, and he is filled with rage, because he knows that he has only a little time left.

Expect Satan to intensify his efforts not because he is winning, but because he is losing.

Romans 8:34 NIV – Who is he that condemns? Christ Jesus, who died–more than that, who was raised to life–is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us.

  1. The Treason not to Pray

James 4:2 NIV – You want something but don’t get it. You kill and covet, but you cannot have what you want. You quarrel and fight. You do not have, because you do not ask God.
