The God Who Blesses

SERIES – The Benediction: Receiving and Sharing the Blessings of God

Numbers 6:22-27 KJV

22   And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,

23   Speak unto Aaron and unto his sons, saying, On this wise ye shall bless the children of Israel, saying unto them,

24   The Lord bless thee, and keep thee:

25   The Lord make his face shine upon thee, and be gracious unto thee:

26   The Lord lift up his countenance upon thee, and give thee peace.

27   And they shall put my name upon the children of Israel; and I will bless them.

Numbers 6:22-26 GNV22 The Lord commanded Moses 23 to tell Aaron and his sons to use the following words in blessing the people of Israel: 24 May the Lord bless you and take care of you; 25 May the Lord be kind and gracious to you; 26 May the Lord look on you with favor and give you peace.

Self-care is not vanity; it’s sanity.

The word benediction is a compound Latin word:

  • Bene – good
  • Diction – word

Genesis 1:10, 12, 18, 21, 25 31 KJV10 And God called the dry land Earth; and the gathering together of the waters called he Seas: and God saw that it was good. 12 And the earth brought forth grass, and herb yielding seed after his kind, and the tree yielding fruit, whose seed was in itself, after his kind: and God saw that it was good. 18 And to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness: and God saw that it was good. 21 And God created great whales, and every living creature that moveth, which the waters brought forth abundantly, after their kind, and every winged fowl after his kind: and God saw that it was good. 25 And God made the beast of the earth after his kind, and cattle after their kind, and every thing that creepeth upon the earth after his kind: and God saw that it was good. 31 And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day.

I. The Source of the Blessing

Blessings are released through:

  • A meaningful touch

Genesis 27:26 KJV – And his father Isaac said unto him, Come near now, and kiss me, my son.

  • A spoken word

James 3:10 KJV – Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be.

  • High value

Genesis 27:27-28 KJV27 And he came near, and kissed him: and he smelled the smell of his raiment, and blessed him, and said, See, the smell of my son is as the smell of a field which the Lord hath blessed: 28 Therefore God give thee of the dew of heaven, and the fatness of the earth, and plenty of corn and wine:

  • A Glorious future

Genesis 27:29 KJV – Let people serve thee, and nations bow down to thee: be lord over thy brethren, and let thy mother’s sons bow down to thee: cursed be every one that curseth thee, and blessed be he that blesseth thee.

  1. Sometimes the Lord keeps you from it.
  2. Sometimes God keeps you in it.

II. The Force of the Blessing

Exodus 33:18-20 KJV18 And he said, I beseech thee, shew me thy glory. 19 And he said, I will make all my goodness pass before thee, and I will proclaim the name of the Lord before thee; and will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will shew mercy on whom I will shew mercy. 20 And he said, Thou canst not see my face: for there shall no man see me, and live.

Genesis 27:13 KJV – And his mother said unto him, Upon me be thy curse, my son: only obey my voice, and go fetch me them.

John 17:22 GNV – I gave them the same glory you gave me, so that they may be one, just as you and I are one…

You can’t:

  1. Earn the blessing
  2. Explain the blessing
  3. Estimate the blessing
  • The Father – The Gift

  • The Holy Spirit – The Gladness

III. The Course of the Blessing

Genesis 12:1-3 KJV1 Now the Lord had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father’s house, unto a land that I will shew thee: 2 And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing: 3 And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.
