SERIES – A Personal Verse for a Public Virus: The Lord is My Shepherd

Psalm 23 KJV

1     The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.

2     He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.

3     He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.

4     Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.

5     Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.

6    Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.

The 23rd Psalm has taught us that God meets our needs comprehensively:

  • Rest
  • Refreshment
  • Restoration
  • Righteousness
  • Relationship
  • Reassurance
  • Resources
  • Retaliation
  • Renewal
  • Reinforcement
  • Reservations

Science may delay death, but science will not deny death.

Possible Positions on Death

  1. Annihilation
  2. Reincarnation
  3. Continuation

Death should not paralyze us; it should energize us.

Death should develop in us a sense of healthy urgency.

Psalm 90:10 NCV – Our lifetime is seventy years or, if we are strong, eighty years. But the years are full of hard work and pain. They pass quickly, and then we are gone.

  1. The Certainty of Heaven

2 Corinthians 12:2-4 KJV2 I knew a man in Christ above fourteen years ago, (whether in the body, I cannot tell; or whether out of the body, I cannot tell: God knoweth;) such an one caught up to the third heaven. 3 And I knew such a man, (whether in the body, or out of the body, I cannot tell: God knoweth;) 4 How that he was caught up into paradise, and heard unspeakable words, which it is not lawful for a man to utter.

Heaven is a:

  • Present place

  • Perfect place

Revelation 21:4 KJV – And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.

  • Purposeful place

Revelation 7:15-17 KJV15 Therefore are they before the throne of God, and serve him day and night in his temple: and he that sitteth on the throne shall dwell among them. 16 They shall hunger no more, neither thirst any more; neither shall the sun light on them, nor any heat. 17 For the Lamb which is in the midst of the throne shall feed them, and shall lead them unto living fountains of waters: and God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes.

  1. The Company of Heaven

Ephesians 2:19-22 NIV19 Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and aliens, but fellow citizens with God’s people and members of God’s household, 20 built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone. 21 In him the whole building is joined together and rises to become a holy temple in the Lord. 22 And in him you too are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by his Spirit.

2 Samuel 12:16-17 KJV16 David therefore besought God for the child; and David fasted, and went in, and lay all night upon the earth. 17 And the elders of his house arose, and went to him, to raise him up from the earth: but he would not, neither did he eat bread with them.

  1. The Constancy of Heaven

Hebrews 12:28 NIV – Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe,

2 Timothy 1:12 KJV – For the which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am not ashamed: for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day.

God is:
