SERIES – A Personal Verse for a Public Virus: The Lord is My Shepherd
Psalm 23:1-4 KJV
1 The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
2 He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.
3 He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.
4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.
- The Shepherd – leads and feeds
- The Sheep – follows and swallows
We make our choices and our choices make us.
I. Water is life
The shepherd provides:
Philippians 4:19 KJV – But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.
God will supply all of our needs, but it does not say God will supply all our wants.
1 Timothy 6:5-10 CEV – 5 and nasty quarrels. They have wicked minds and have missed out on the truth. These people think religion is supposed to make you rich. 6 And religion does make your life rich, by making you content with what you have. 7 We didn’t bring anything into this world, and we won’t take anything with us when we leave. 8 So we should be satisfied just to have food and clothes. 9 People who want to be rich fall into all sorts of temptations and traps. They are caught by foolish and harmful desires that drag them down and destroy them. 10 The love of money causes all kinds of trouble. Some people want money so much that they have given up their faith and caused themselves a lot of pain.
Simplicity is the absence of artificial ornamentation, embellishment, flamboyance, showiness, and artificiality that we add to our lives to hide from each other who we really are.
The greatest sign of spiritual maturity is not getting more but needing less.
John 10:11, 14 CEV – 11 I am the good shepherd, and the good shepherd gives up his life for his sheep. 14 I am the good shepherd. I know my sheep, and they know me.
Hebrews 13:20-21 CEV – 20 God gives peace, and he raised our Lord Jesus Christ from death. Now Jesus is like a Great Shepherd whose blood was used to make God’s eternal agreement with his flock. 21 I pray that God will make you ready to obey him and that you will always be eager to do right. May Jesus help you do what pleases God. To Jesus Christ be glory forever and ever! Amen.
1 Peter 5:4 CEV – Then when Christ the Chief Shepherd returns, you will be given a crown that will never lose its glory.
John 7:37-38 CEV – 37 On the last and most important day of the festival, Jesus stood up and shouted, “If you are thirsty, come to me and drink! 38 Have faith in me, and you will have life-giving water flowing from deep inside you, just as the Scriptures say.”
Isaiah 55:1 CEV – If you are thirsty, come and drink water! If you don’t have any money, come, eat what you want! Drink wine and milk without paying a cent.
Exodus 17:6-7 CEV – 6 and when you get to the rock at Mount Sinai, I will be there with you. Strike the rock with the stick, and water will pour out for the people to drink.” Moses did this while the leaders watched. 7 The people had complained and tested the Lord by asking, “Is the Lord really with us?” So Moses named that place Massah, which means “testing” and Meribah, which means “complaining.”
1 Corinthians 10:1-4 CEV – 1 Friends, I want to remind you that all of our ancestors walked under the cloud and went through the sea. 2 This was like being baptized and becoming followers of Moses. 3 All of them also ate the same spiritual food 4 and drank the same spiritual drink, which flowed from the spiritual rock that followed them. That rock was Christ.
Revelation 22:1 CEV – The angel showed me a river that was crystal clear, and its waters gave life. The river came from the throne where God and the Lamb were seated.
- Anybody can drink water
- Everybody needs water
- Water can go where you can’t go
- You don’t have to tell water where to go
II. Water is death
Jeremiah 2:13 CEV – You, my people, have sinned in two ways— you have rejected me, the source of life-giving water, and you’ve tried to collect water in cracked and leaking pits dug in the ground.
Proverbs 25:26 CEV – When a good person gives in to the wicked, it’s like dumping garbage in a stream of clear water.
Never judge the path God leads you on until you get to the end of the path.
Don’t criticize an unfinished plan of God.
Psalm 77:11, 19-20 TLB – 11 I recall the many miracles he did for me so long ago. 19 Your road led by a pathway through the sea—a pathway no one knew was there! 20 You led your people along that road like a flock of sheep, with Moses and Aaron as their shepherds.
