Adventurous Faith SERIES – Crazy Faith

Hebrew 11:8 NIV
By faith Abraham, when called to go
to a place he would later receive as his
inheritance, obeyed and went, even though
he did not know where he was going.
Romans 4:11 NIV
And he received the sign of circumcision, a
seal of the righteousness that he had by faith
while he was still uncircumcised. So then, he
is the father of all who believe but have not
been circumcised, in order that righteousness
might be credited to them.
Faith is taking the next step even when you can’t
see the whole stair case.
Martin Luther King Jr.
Adventure is the ability to step out into the
unknown
with God.

I.
How faith is formed
Genesis 12:1 NIV
– The Lord had said to Abram, “Leave your
country, your people and your father’s household and go
to the land I will show you.
Genesis 11:27-28 NIV
27
This is the account of Terah.
Terah became the father of Abram, Nahor and Haran. And
Haran became the father of Lot.
28
While his father Terah
was still alive, Haran died in Ur of the Chaldeans, in the land
of his birth.
This was a call to service and obedience.
Genesis 12:1-4 NIV
1
The Lord had said to Abram, “Leave your country, your
people and your father’s household and go to the
land I will show you.
2
“I will make you into a great nation and I will bless
you; I will make your name great, and you will be a
blessing.
3
I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses
you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be
blessed through you.”
4
So Abram left, as the Lord had told him; and Lot went
with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he
set out from Haran.
1.
Where am I going?
2.
How will I get there?
3.
How long will it take?
Go to the land
I will
show you
II.
How faith is flawed
Perfection is not a
prerequisite for God to use
you.
A.
Disobedience
Genesis 11:31 NIV
– Terah took his son Abram, his grandson
Lot son of Haran, and his daughter-in-law Sarai, the wife
of his son Abram, and together they set out from Ur of
the Chaldeans to go to Canaan. But when they came to
Haran, they settled there.
Partial obedience is complete disobedience.
B.
Disbelief
Genesis 12:10 NIV
– Now there was a famine in the land,
and Abram went down to Egypt to live there for a while
because the famine was severe.
Isaiah 31:1 NIV
– Woe to those who go down to Egypt for
help, who rely on horses, who trust in the multitude of their
chariots and in the great strength of their horsemen, but
do not look to the Holy One of Israel, or seek help from the
Lord.
Options we have when trouble comes, in our
prayers:
1.
How can I get out of this?
2.
What can I get out of this?
C
.
Dishonesty
Genesis 12:11-20 NIV
11
As he was about to enter Egypt,
he said to his wife Sarai, “I know what a beautiful woman
you are.
12
When the Egyptians see you, they will say,
‘This is his wife.’ Then they will kill me but will let you live.
13
Say you are my sister, so that I will be treated well for your
sake and my life will be spared because of you.”
14
When
Abram came to Egypt, the Egyptians saw that she was
a very beautiful woman.
15
And when Pharaoh’s officials
saw her, they praised her to Pharaoh, and she was taken
into his palace.
16
He treated Abram well for her sake,
and Abram acquired sheep and cattle, male and female
donkeys, menservants and maidservants, and camels.
17
But the Lord inflicted serious diseases on Pharaoh and his
household because of Abram’s wife Sarai.
18
So Pharaoh
summoned Abram. “What have you done to me?” he said.
“Why didn’t you tell me she was your wife?
19
Why did you
say, ‘She is my sister,’ so that I took her to be my wife? Now
then, here is your wife. Take her and go!”
20
Then Pharaoh
gave orders about Abram to his men, and they sent him on
his way, with his wife and everything he had.
Matthew 5:48 KJV
– Be ye therefore perfect, even as your
Father which is in heaven is perfect.

How faith is fortified
Genesis 13:1-4 NIV
1
So Abram went up from
Egypt to the Negev, with his wife and everything
he had, and Lot went with him.
2
Abram had
become very wealthy in livestock and in silver
and gold.
3
From the Negev he went from place
to place until he came to Bethel, to the place
between Bethel and Ai where his tent had been
earlier
4
and where he had first built an altar.
There Abram called on the name of the Lord.
Genesis 12:8 NIV
– From there he went on toward
the hills east of Bethel and pitched his tent, with
Bethel on the west and Ai on the east. There he
built an altar to the Lord and called on the name
of the Lord
Abram rejected
the world (v. 13:1)
Abram restored
his witness (v. 13:3)
Sometimes the way
forward
is the backward.
Abram renewed
his worship (v. 13:4)
First, I was dying to finish high school and start
college. And then I was dying to finish college
and start working. And then I was dying to marry
and have children. And then I was dying for my
children to grow old enough for school, so I could
return to work. And then I was dying to retire. And
now I am dying…and suddenly I realize I forgot to
live
