How to Fix a Broken Relationship

SERIES – Growing Healthy Relationships

2 Corinthians 5:18-21 KJV

18   And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation;

19   To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation.

20   Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ’s stead, be ye reconciled to God.

21   For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.

Reconciliation is the coming to an AGREEMENT between two are more persons after a misunderstanding or estrangement.

Reconciliation is a four step process:

  2. TRUTH

Ephesians 4:32 NIV – Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.

John 8:32 KJV – And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.

We avoid the truth through:

Romans 12:18 NIV – If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.

  1. Ask God to help you overcome BITTERNESS

Hebrews 12:15 NIV – See to it that no one misses the grace of God and that no bitter root grows up to cause trouble and defile many.

Galatians 5:15 CEV – But if you keep attacking each other like wild animals, you had better watch out or you will destroy yourselves.

Bitterness is when you become a PRISONER TO A PAINFUL MEMORY.

Philippians 4:8 CEV – Finally, my friends, keep your minds on whatever is true, pure, right, holy, friendly, and proper. Don’t ever stop thinking about what is truly worthwhile and worthy of praise.

  1. Acknowledge that each of us have the capacity God do EVIL THINGS

Galatians 6:3 CEV – If you think you are better than others, when you really aren’t, you are wrong.

Ezekiel 3:14-15 CEV – 14 Then the Spirit carried me away. The Lord’s power had taken complete control of me, and I was both annoyed and angry. 15 When I was back with the others living at Abib Hill near the Chebar River, I sat among them for seven days, shocked at what had happened to me.

  1. Admit my CONTRIBUTION to the broken relationship

Romans 3:23 KJV – For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;

  1. Attack the PROBLEM and not the PERSON

Ephesians 4:15 KJV – But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ:

Galatians 6:1 MSG –  Live creatively, friends. If someone falls into sin, forgivingly restore him, saving your critical comments for yourself. You might be needing forgiveness before the day’s out.

Love without truth is HYPOCRISY.

Truth without love is BRUTALITY.
