SERIES: High Performance People
Proverbs 24:30-34 GNV
30 I walked through the fields and vineyards of a
lazy, stupid person.
31 They were full of thorn bushes and overgrown
with weeds. The stone wall around them had
32 I looked at this, thought about it, and learned
a lesson from it:
33 Go ahead and take your nap; go ahead and
sleep. Fold your hands and rest awhile,
34 but while you are asleep, poverty will attack
you like an armed robber.
Laziness is IDLENESS.
Matthew 20:6 NIV – About the eleventh hour he
went out and found still others standing around.
He asked them, ‘Why have you been standing
here all day long doing nothing?’
It is possible to be busy with things that do not
1 Timothy 5:13 NIV – Besides, they get into the
habit of being idle and going about from house
to house. And not only do they become idlers,
but also gossips and busybodies, saying things
they ought not to.
Work is a physical or mental activity performed in
an EFFORT to PRODUCE a RESULT.
Reasons for work:
1. God ORDAINED it.
2. Work develops DIGNITY.
Proverbs 22:29 NIV – Do you see a man skilled in
his work? He will serve before kings; he will not
serve before obscure men.
3. Work SUPPLIES our needs.
2 Thessalonians 3:7-10 NIV – 7 For you yourselves
know how you ought to follow our example. We
were not idle when we were with you, 8 nor did
we eat anyone’s food without paying for it. On the
contrary, we worked night and day, laboring and
toiling so that we would not be a burden to any of
you. 9 We did this, not because we do not have the
right to such help, but in order to make ourselves a
model for you to follow. 10 For even when we were
with you, we gave you this rule: “If a man will not
work, he shall not eat.”
James 5:1-5 NIV – 1 Now listen, you rich people,
weep and wail because of the misery that is coming
upon you. 2 Your wealth has rotted, and moths
have eaten your clothes. 3 Your gold and silver are
corroded. Their corrosion will testify against you and
eat your flesh like fire. You have hoarded wealth in
the last days. 4 Look! The wages you failed to pay
the workmen who mowed your fields are crying
out against you. The cries of the harvesters have
reached the ears of the Lord Almighty. 5 You have
lived on earth in luxury and self-indulgence. You
have fattened yourselves in the day of slaughter.
4. Work develops CHARACTER.
Proverbs 6:6-8 GNV – 6 Lazy people should learn a
lesson from the way ants live.7 They have no leader,
chief, or ruler,8 but they store up their food during
the summer, getting ready for winter.
5. Work allows me to be GENEROUS.
Luke 10: 33-35 NIV – 33 But a Samaritan, as he
traveled, came where the man was; and when he
saw him, he took pity on him. 34 He went to him and
bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine.
Then he put the man on his own donkey, took him
to an inn and took care of him. 35 The next day
he took out two silver coins and gave them to the
innkeeper. ‘Look after him,’ he said, ‘and when I
return, I will reimburse you for any extra expense you
6. Work allows me to IMITATE God.
John 5:17 GNV – Jesus answered them, “My Father is
always working, and I too must work.”
