Mirrors or Windows?

Psalm 19:12-13 NIV

12 Who can discern his errors? Forgive my hidden faults.

13 Keep your servant also from willful sins; may they not rule over me. Then will I be blameless, innocent of great transgression.

Luke 15:12, 17-19 KJV

12 And the younger of them said to his father, Father, give me the portion of goods that falleth to me. And he divided unto them his living.

17 And when he came to himself, he said, How many hired servants of my father’s have bread enough and to spare, and I perish with hunger!

18 I will arise and go to my father, and will say unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and before thee,

19 And am no more worthy to be called thy son: make me as one of thy hired servants.

James 1:22-25 GNV

22 Do not deceive yourselves by just listening to his word; instead, put it into practice.

23 If you listen to the word, but do not put it into practice you are like people who look in a mirror and see themselves as they are.

24 They take a good look at themselves and then go away and at once forget what they look like.

25 But if you look closely into the perfect law that sets people free, and keep on paying attention to it and do not simply listen and then forget it, but put it into practice – you will be blessed by God in what you do.

One of the sure signs of MATURITY is the ability to rise to the point of self-criticism.

Two reason we can’t look in the mirror:

Confirmation Bias or my-side bias is when we search for people or information that will CONFIRM your bias.

Here’s to the man who is wisest and best,

Here’s to the man whose judgment is blessed,

Here’s to the man who is as smart as can be,

Because here is the man who AGREES with me.

It’s difficult to get a man to understand something when his salary depends on not UNDERSTANDING it.

Upton Sinclair

The Black Community is laboring under an OLD AGENDA, at a time when there is a need for a NEW AGENDA. The black community in order to survive must REASSESS our agenda.

The purpose of a mirror is CORRECTIONS not REFLECTIONS

The purpose of a mirror is not just VANITY but SANITY.

Whenever we are the objects of criticism from white men, even though the criticism are maliciously directed and mixed with half truths, we must pick out the elements of truth and make them the basis of CREATIVE RECONSTRUCTION. We must not let the fact that we are the victims of injustice lull us into abrogating RESPONSIBILITY for our own lives. Our crime rate is too high.
