I Quit Making Excuses!

SERIES:  I Quit: Putting an End to Self-Sabotaging Behavior

Luke 14:16-24 NIV

16     Jesus replied: “A certain man was preparing a great banquet and invited many guests.

17     At the time of the banquet he sent his servant to tell those who had been invited, ‘Come, for everything is now ready.’

18     “But they all alike began to make excuses. The first said, ‘I have just bought a field, and I must go and see it. Please excuse me.’

19     “Another said, ‘I have just bought five yoke of oxen, and I’m on my way to try them out. Please excuse me.’

20     “Still another said, ‘I just got married, so I can’t come.’

21     “The servant came back and reported this to his master. Then the owner of the house became angry and ordered his servant, ‘Go out quickly into the streets and alleys of the town and bring in the poor, the crippled, the blind and the lame.’

22     ” ‘Sir,’ the servant said, ‘what you ordered has been done, but there is still room.’

23     “Then the master told his servant, ‘Go out to the roads and country lanes and make them come in, so that my house will be full.

24I    tell you, not one of those men who were invited will get a taste of my banquet.’ ”

The problem is not with the insights of social science but in the way we have MISUSED the insights of social science.

Social Science was started to give us EXPLANATIONS for the purpose of remedying destructive behavior.

Social Science is being misused to give people EXCUSES to continue destructive behavior.

Most common excuses:

I.             The IT JUST HAPPENED excuse

Exodus 32:21-24 NIV21 He said to Aaron, “What did these people do to you, that you led them into such great sin?” 22“Do not be angry, my lord,” Aaron answered. “You know how prone these people are to evil. 23They said to me, ‘Make us gods who will go before us. As for this fellow Moses who brought us up out of Egypt, we don’t know what has happened to him.’ 24 So I told them, ‘Whoever has any gold jewelry, take it off.’ Then they gave me the gold, and I threw it into the fire, and out came this calf !

II.           The I COULDN’T HELP MYSELF excuse

Genesis 25:29-34 NIV29 Once when Jacob was cooking some stew, Esau came in from the open country, famished. 30 He said to Jacob, “Quick, let me have some of that red stew! I’m famished!” (That is why he was also called Edom.) 31 Jacob replied, “First sell me your birthright.” 32 “Look, I am about to die,” Esau said. “What good is the birthright to me?” 33 But Jacob said, “Swear to me first.” So he swore an oath to him, selling his birthright to Jacob. 34 Then Jacob gave Esau some bread and some lentil stew. He ate and drank, and then got up and left. So Esau despised his birthright.

III.          The BLAME SOMEONE ELSE excuse

Genesis 3:11-14 NIV11 And he said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from?” 12 The man said, “The woman you put here with me–she gave me some fruit from the tree, and I ate it.” 13 Then the LORD God said to the woman, “What is this you have done?” The woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.” 14 So the LORD God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this, “Cursed are you above all the livestock and all the wild animals! You will crawl on your belly and you will eat dust all the days of your life.

1 Samuel 15:24 NIV – Then Saul said to Samuel, “I have sinned. I violated the LORD’s command and your instructions. I was afraid of the people and so I gave in to them.

2 Samuel 12:13 NIV – Then David said to Nathan, “I have sinned against the LORD.” Nathan replied, “The LORD has taken away your sin. You are not going to die.

Always remember that the door knob to your heart TURNS FROM THE INSIDE only.

Stop making excuses because excuses prevent us from:

1.   SEEING ourselves for who we really are.

2.   BECOMING what God intended for us to truly be.
