Break the Huddle
James 2:14-26 GNV
14 My friends, what good is it for one of you to say that you have faith if your actions do not prove it? Can that faith save you?
15 Suppose there are brothers or sisters who need clothes and don’t have enough to eat.
16 What good is there in your saying to them, “God bless you! Keep warm and eat well!” – if you don’t give them the necessities of life?
17 So it is with faith: if it is alone and includes no actions, then it is dead.
18 But someone will say, “One person has faith, another has actions.” My answer is, “Show me how anyone can have faith without actions. I will show you my faith by my actions.”
19 Do you believe that there is only one God? Good! The demons also believe – and tremble with fear.
20 You fool! Do you want to be shown that faith without actions is useless?
21 How was our ancestor Abraham put right with God? It was through his actions, when he offered his son Isaac on the altar.
22 Can’t you see? His faith and his actions worked together; his faith was made perfect through his actions.
23 And the scripture came true that said, “Abraham believed God, and because of his faith God accepted him as righteous.” And so Abraham was called God’s friend.
24 You see, then, that it is by our actions that we are put right with God, and not by our faith alone.
25 It was the same with the prostitute Rahab. She was put right with God through her actions, by welcoming the Israelite spies and helping them to escape by a different road.
26 So then, as the body without the spirit is dead, also faith without actions is dead.
The devil is not an ATHEIST.
The devil is DOCTRINALLY sound.
Mark 5:6-8 GNV – 6 He was some distance away when he saw Jesus; so he ran, fell on his knees before him, 7 and screamed in a loud voice, “Jesus, Son of the Most High God! What do you want with me? For God’s sake, I beg you, don’t punish me! 8 (He said this because Jesus was saying, “Evil spirit, come out of this man!”)
The devil knows the BIBLE.
Matthew 4:5-6 GNV – 5 Then the Devil took Jesus to Jerusalem, the Holy City, set him on the highest point of the Temple, 6 and said to him, “If you are God’s Son, throw yourself down, for the scripture says, “God will give orders to his angels about you; they will hold you up with their hands, so that not even your feet will be hurt on the stones.’ ”
Romans 5:1 KJV – Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.
Ephesians 2:8-10 GNV – 8 For it is by God’s grace that you have been saved through faith. It is not the result of your own efforts, 9 but God’s gift, so that no one can boast about it. 10 God has made us what we are, and in our union with Christ Jesus he has created us for a life of good deeds, which he has already prepared for us to do.
Paul is dealing with JUSTIFICATION.
James is dealing with VALIDATION.
Faith alone makes us right but faith that is right is never ALONE.
Why break the huddle?
I. You can never ADVANCE the ball unless you break the huddle and run the play.
II. You need to run the play because you are on the CLOCK.
III. If you don’t run the play, God will BENCH you.
Esther 4:14 GNV – If you keep quiet at a time like this, help will come from heaven to the Jews, and they will be saved, but you will die and your father’s family will come to an end. Yet who knows – maybe it was for a time like this that you were made queen!”
Luke 19:40 GNV – Jesus answered, “I tell you that if they keep quiet, the stones themselves will start shouting.”
There is no advancement without ADVERSITY.
2 Corinthians 4:8-9 GNV – 8 We are often troubled, but not crushed; sometimes in doubt, but never in despair; 9 there are many enemies, but we are never without a friend; and though badly hurt at times, we are not destroyed.
