What Good is Good?

SERIES: i-Church: The “I” is for Involvement

Acts 10:38 NIV

38  how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, and how he went around doing good and healing all who were under the power of the devil, because God was with him.

  1. I.             The SIGN of goodness

Ministry takes place when DIVINE resources meet HUMAN needs through LOVING channels to the GLORY of God.

Jesus did good by meeting human NEEDS and changing human NATURE.

James 2:14-17 MSG14 Dear friends, do you think you’ll get anywhere in this if you learn all the right words but never do anything? Does merely talking about faith indicate that a person really has it? 15 For instance, you come upon an old friend dressed in rags and half-starved 16 and say, “Good morning, friend! Be clothed in Christ! Be filled with the Holy Spirit!” and walk off without providing so much as a coat or a cup of soup – where does that get you? 17 Isn’t it obvious that God-talk without God-acts is outrageous nonsense?

Who am I? I never drank, smoked, womanized and I was a vegetarian…ADOLPH HITLER

  1. II.           The SIGNIFICANCE of goodness
  2. God MADE us for goodness

Ephesians 2:10 MSG – No, we neither make nor save ourselves. God does both the making and saving. He creates each of us by Christ Jesus to join him in the work he does, the good work he has gotten ready for us to do, work we had better be doing.

  1. The WORLD needs our goodness

Romans 12:20-21 NIV20 On the contrary: “If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink. In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head.” 21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

Good deeds create good will that creates a platform for us to share the good news.

Do all the good you can

By all the means you can

In all the ways you can

In all the places you can

At all the times you can

To all the people you can

As long as you can

—John Wesley, Father of the Methodist Church

  1. The CHURCH needs our goodness

Galatians 6:10 NIV – Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.

  1. Goodness ultimately PREVAILS

Genesis 50:20 NLT – You intended to harm me, but God intended it all for good. He brought me to this position so I could save the lives of many people.

Romans 8:28 KJV – And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.

Galatians 6:10 NIV – Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.

  1. III.          The SOURCE of goodness

PIC: Bill Epstein book, Good without God.

James 1:17 NLT – Whatever is good and perfect comes down to us from God our Father, who created all the lights in the heavens. He never changes or casts a shifting shadow.

Isaiah 45:1-5 MSG1 God’s Message to his anointed, to Cyrus, whom he took by the hand To give the task of taming the nations, of terrifying their kings – He gave him free rein, no restrictions: 2 “I’ll go ahead of you, clearing and paving the road. I’ll break down bronze city gates, smash padlocks, kick down barred entrances. 3 I’ll lead you to buried treasures, secret caches of valuables – Confirmations that it is, in fact, I, God, the God of Israel, who calls you by your name. 4 It’s because of my dear servant Jacob, Israel my chosen, That I’ve singled you out, called you by name, and given you this privileged work. And you don’t even know me! 5 I am God, the only God there is. Besides me there are no real gods. I’m the one who armed you for this work, though you don’t even know me…
