The Voices of St. Stephen of Southern Indiana is a nearly forty member ensemble comprised of people from various races, generations and backgrounds; with one common goal, lifting up the name of the lord.

St. Stephen Baptist Church became a trail blazer nearly a decade ago by expanding its ministry into Southern Indiana. At the time this was uncharted waters, and everything including its music ministry had to be built from the ground up. An idea was tossed in about creating a Southern Indiana Choir, and from there the ripple effect began.

The Voices of St. Stephen of Southern Indiana was formed in 2001, by two visionaries who cemented the foundation for Southern Indiana’s Music Ministry; Southern Indiana’s former minister of music John Ray and Vosssi’s first president Theresa Bates.

At this time, St. Stephen Southern Indiana was still holding its worship services inside of Clarksville High school.  In these early days it was the newly formed “Voices” that set the atmosphere reminding members “the church is its people and not the building.”

St. Stephen Southern Indiana ran into some snags and snares during its early days just as any new venture does, and the Voices of Southern Indiana also experienced its own growing pains. During this time VOSSI underwent several tests… and each time they proved resilient. In spite of changing directors and a brief disbandment, this body of devout members rolled with the punches and pressed forward.

These experiences have allowed The Voices of Southern Indiana to be trained under some of Louisville’s most talented musicians including; Joe Leavell, Vincent Bland and Troy Bell.

In 2008 The Lord saw fit to bless VOSSSI double for their trouble,

 By allowing them to share Minister Kevin James and Minister Ton’ya Triplett with the Tabernacle and Sanctuary Choirs.

The Voices of St. Stephen, say they may be small in body, but they are certainly big in heart. This choir has only touched the surface of what it is the Lord has called them to do, so hold on, because the best is yet to come.

 So in the words of Donald Lawrence stay tuned because “You ain’t seen nothing yet.”
