Poem excerpt adapted from Nixon Waterman
I calculate I’ve been around as much as anybody.
Observing all the ways of folk.
And after pretty careful study, it’s my conclusion
That while men are secure about all the credit due them,
the women as a rule don’t always get the praise
That should be comin’ to them.
Just take the leaders one by one and
They will tell you in one way or other
The strength that helped them win their
Place was borrowed from their mother.
If the truth is ever known of
How they got so noted,
A lot of statutes would be rebuilt and petticoated.
I don’t maintain womenfolk are perfect and I never said it.
But I believe they are doing things for which some men are getting credit.
And when you see a monument
With some man figure above it.
You can rest assure that some
Mother is at the bottom of it.
